FFxFF 03: SSSSSSteph

Nathaniel Mell

Our third release for March's FFxFF colab is by Steph Liebetreu, Production Technician and illustrator extraordinaire, who brings us a host of her whimsically decorated wares!  Steph sources her imagery from old fairy tales, mythologies, anime and her own brain!  We are constantly excited and inspired by what Steph is producing, and are proud to have her as a member of our team!

How did you come to work at F+F?

S: My sister, as you may know, is Maritza the OG Felt+Fat employee. I was living and working in Atlanta after graduating from Georgia State University with a degree in Printmaking with no notions on leaving. Fate had other plans though. I visited Philly to help Maritza move up here and felt a strange magnetism to the place. Then, Nate offered me a job and it just felt like a sign. After much deliberation I decided to uproot and start anew.

What inspired your collaborative pieces for our FFxFF series?

S: I have always been kind of obsessed with animals and magic. Books were my escape, and the memories associated with those stories are dear to me. The animals and imagery I chose to use are ones that are often associated with fantasy and some of the most common human experiences. Toads, bats and cats have ties to magic and spooky happenings. Crows are significant beings in many cultures, with roles as guides, helpers and villains. These things create a sense of personal connection with the pieces, and their cultural significance connects them with whoever interacts with them.

What do you do when you're not in the studio?

S: I make a lot of my personal work at my home nest/workspace. When I'm not doing that I love reading, watching movies and playing video games. I'm a bit of a hermit.  I'm also a part of This Many Boyfriends Club with Maritza and Emily.

FFxFF 02 : Emily!

Nathaniel Mell

Our second release for March's FFxFF colab is by Emily Daley, Production Technician, Old Soul and Questioner Extraordinaire, who brings us two mugs that are ready for Spring!  Their large capacity (16oz!) is offset by their light and airy surfaces, accented with bands of gold luster.  We are constantly excited and inspired by what Emily is producing, and are proud to have her as a member of our team!

How did you come to work at F+F?

E: Post-college I was really hoping to snag a job in my field because catering sucks, I don't like working with people, and I spent all this time and money honing my skills resulting in my Ceramics/Glass degree. I vaguely knew Nate from school as we were both in the Glass program at Tyler School of Art, though he graduated a few years before me. Knowing he had a growing, successful ceramics business, I reached out to him.

What inspired your collaborative pieces for our FFxFF series?

E: Considering the current political climate, I wanted to make work that would facilitate a more fun, whimsical, and relaxing beverage consumption experience. For a moment that can, in a sense, take you away from the present and to a place that is soft, pink, and inviting. The studio we slave away in daily (I love my job) is walled with enormous windows that often display beautiful cotton candy sunsets which relaxed and soothed me during work hours. I wanted to convey this feeling in my collaboration.

What do you do when you're not in the studio?

E: I spend a great deal of my free time in the studio, working on our independent artist collective group, This Many Boyfriends Club (@thismanyboyfriendsclub). Otherwise, I love dancing and cartoons (both of which I bring to the studio anyway).

How did you come to work at F+F?

M: Before F+F I was living in Atlanta, studying at Georgia State University. During my time at GSU I took a wheel throwing course and fell completely in love with ceramics. Slowly I began to make ceramics a part of my life by any means I could. I started following F+F on Instagram, commenting when I felt particularly inspired. Nate took note of my comments and reached out to me, offering an internship at the company. I dropped everything and came to Philly, and here I've stayed.

What Inspired your collaborative pieces for our FFxFF series?

M: All of my time spent in the studio itself and the smoke breaks I take throughout the day influenced my work for this series. There are so many windows inviting views into the vast blue sky, countless hours spent feeling porcelain in my paws, precious golden moments of peace. Smoke breaks provide a time to reflect, to restore balance if only for an instant. I wanted to make a perfect set to accompany a perfect ritual. A drink, a smoke, and a sigh.

What do you do when you're not in the studio?

M: Between working full time and creating the cutest shit you ever did see for This Many Boyfriends Club, I'm always in the studio. Sometimes I play bass.
